SDAT runs tax credit awareness campaign and encourages Maryland residents to apply online
Over 140,000 postcards mailed encouraging low-income homeowners and tenants to claim property tax credits
The Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT) urges residents of Maryland to determine if they may qualify for a property tax credit for homeowners or tenants by accessing our innovative tax credit claim system by line, which strengthens our ability to continue processing all tax credits. requests in a precise and timely manner. As part of the 2020 Tax Credit awareness campaign, last week, SDAT sent 133,706 postcards to low-income Maryland homeowners who may be eligible for credit but have not yet submitted a demand. In addition, SDAT representatives participated in outreach activities throughout the year with various interest groups and organizations to educate Maryland residents about tax breaks available to them.
The Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit Program provides relief to qualifying homeowners by setting a limit on the amount of property taxes owed based on their income. If a resident has already paid their property taxes and applies for them by October 1, any tax credit the homeowner may be entitled to will be refunded by their county finance office. In 2019, 46,000 homeowners received an average of $ 1,347.65 in tax relief and 8,773 tenants received an average of $ 413.53 in tax relief. Together, these two tax credit programs saved Marylanders over $ 65 million last year. Many counties and municipalities also offer additional homeowner credits as defined by Section 9-215 on Property Tax, which provide additional tax relief.
