Mercedes-Benz USA Announces First Results of Survey of Data Affecting Customers and Interested Buyers | Business
ATLANTA – (BUSINESS WIRE) – June 24, 2021–
On June 11, 2021, a supplier informed Mercedes-Benz that the sensitive personal information of less than 1,000 Mercedes-Benz customers and interested buyers had been inadvertently made available on a cloud storage platform. This confirmation was part of an ongoing investigation carried out in cooperation with the seller. The problem was discovered through the dedicated work of an external security researcher. We understand that the information was entered by interested customers and buyers on the dealership and Mercedes-Benz websites between January 1, 2014 and June 19, 2017. No Mercedes-Benz system has been compromised at the time. as a result of this incident, and at this time we have no evidence that any Mercedes-Benz files were misused.
Data security is a serious matter for MBUSA. Our supplier has confirmed that the problem is fixed and that such an event cannot be replicated. We will continue our investigation to ensure this situation is properly addressed.
The provider reports that the personal information of these people (less than 1000) consists mainly of self-reported credit scores as well as a very small number of driver’s license numbers, social security numbers, card information credit and dates of birth. To view the information, one would need to know about special software and tools – a search of the Internet would not return any information contained in these files.
The survey was launched to assess the accessibility of approximately 1.6 million unique records. The vast majority of these records included information such as name, address, emails, phone numbers and some information about the vehicle purchased. However, MBUSA would like to point out that a review of the data entry record set determined that less than 1,000 individual Mercedes-Benz customers and interested buyers had additional personal information in a publicly available state. Mercedes-Benz USA has already started notifying those, whose additional information was available, of this incident. Anyone with credit card information, driver’s license number or Social Security number included in the data will be offered a free 24-month subscription to a credit monitoring service. We will also notify the appropriate government agencies.
